The World of Korean Paper
Learn the process of making hanji (Korean paper) in the gadum tteugi (beginner) style from raw paper mulberry bark. Explore methods of manipulating paper made in class and imported from Korea. Together, complete the various steps to prepare raw materials for papermaking, fiber, sculpture, and book applications. Hanji will be used for joomchi (paper fusing and texturing) and jiseung (cord and twine), to spin into thread, and to weave. Along with hanji folklore, Aimee will share her own methods of using this strong and malleable substrate. Come prepared to work physically and cooperatively and to leave with an abundant array of paper samples and techniques to continue at home. For anyone interested in East Asian paper traditions and the experience of patient manual labor to sustain a time-tested craft. All levels welcome.
