From cave carvings to Michelango to 20th century abstractions, stone carving is one of the oldest and evolving forms of artistic expression. Working in beautiful Tennessee marble that is white with grey veins, Jim will guide students to see what the stone inspires. Starting with a block approximately 12" x 6" x 6", learn to use traditional mallets and chisels as well as more modern electric grinders with diamond-tipped carving wheels to shape the stones. Hone the curves and lines of the piece using rasps and files. Lastly, learn to sand and polish for smooth finish,if desired. Bring openness and ideas; all levels welcome.
