Inspired by Nature, Crafted By Hand

Aug 25 - 31

Artists are endlessly attracted to nature. They observe, study, and record their surroundings;  revere nature as muse;  get lost and found within the landscape; and find constant inspiration in the existance of the natural world.

In this special theme week at Snow Farm, instructors and students come together to explore the challenge of captuing the ultimate beauty of nature. The peaceful and rustic grounds at Snow Farm are the perfect setting for seeking natural forms to cast in metal or draw in watercolor pencil. The shapes of the animals, insects, and plants will be the subject of classes in glassblowing, flameworking, ceramics, and mosaics. Natural dying and woodturning root balls and burls round out the week which will certainly spark collaborations as each class uses different materials to express their artistic visions of the natural world.

Extra features of this week are included and optional:

  • evening artist talks and nature walks
  • a visit to nearby Three Sisters Sanctuary on Wednesday afternooon
  • festive dinner under the summer sky on Friday night

Five-day workshops at Snow Farm offer the luxury of giving new ideas plenty of time to sink in and swirl around. In the evenings, studios are open for expansive practice time of day's learning. There is no instruction on Wednesday afternoons, so some students leave campus to discover the riches of the surrounding Pioneer Valley, while others stay on campus for a massage, a walk, or more studio time.  During the Inspired by Nature week, evening activites and artist talks will follow the theme.  On Wednesday afternoon, we suggest a visit to Three Sisters Sanctuary, an expansive art garden just up the road from Snow Farm, or a nature walk in the woods on the Snow Farm property. On Friday night, the week concludes with a celebratory dinner under the summer sky.
