How do you make fabrics that are rich in depth, texture and imagery? By layering one technique over another. So let’s do it! We’ll start each piece with itajime clamping and arashi pole-wrapping, Japanese shibori tie-dye techniques. This will give us a foundation of light and dark patterns to build on.
Next, we’ll layer on textures and imagery with soy wax batik, another resist technique. We’ll blockprint, stamp and brush the wax over the shibori patterns and then overdye with a spectrum of colors. Soy wax is an easy-to-use, non-toxic alternative to the petroleum-based waxes conventionally used in batik.
When you show off these rich and complex fabrics back home, everyone will say, “Whoa! How did you do that?”
