Metal clay is metal in a clay-like form that can be shaped, formed, molded or carved, fired in a kiln and then finished and polished. We will work exclusively with PMC3, a fine (pure) silver metal clay, which when fired, forms a piece of work that is light, durable and precious. Metal clay is The Great Storyteller, so we’ll use this distinctive quality to create narrative objects and/or jewelry that reflect and give voice to our individual stories and histories. We’ll reach into our memories of home, family, and meaningful life experiences to express elements of these in fine silver, into wearable shapes and forms that will remind us of the complex richness of where we’ve been, where we are and perhaps, where we hope to be. The techniques explored can include mold-forming, hollow forming, hinge-making, dry construction, textures, etching, granulation, and more. We will also create one to two etching plates for printing images/text on metal clay. Experience with this material or with jewelry making is helpful but not required.
