This class will cover a variety of fast and exciting approaches to making hollow, animal sculpture in clay. Techniques play an important role in subject interpretation so we will employ a whole range of them: pinch, coil, slab, and dowel. External armatures will be introduced to help in the creation and successful development of ideas. Basic animal anatomy will be discussed as this knowledge should underpin all our thinking. However, it is not the goal to make super realistic creatures, but to capture more of the spirit, vigor and nature of the beast. In order to confront and solve the technical problems that often arise in making large sculpture, students will be encouraged to work on a scale that has presence! Paper clay, with its incredible tolerance will be the clay of choice, but students are welcome to opt for their preferred clay body. Demonstrations will be ongoing and personal assistance will be offered. No prior clay experience is necessary.
